Faculty Mentoring Program
| Purpose
Faculty research development with an
emphasis on extramural research funding in the Behavioral and Social
Sciences.
Program The Mentoring Program targets faculty
members who have not previously engaged or been successful in research
grant writing. |
Co-Directors:
Steve Beach, Aaron Johnson,
Paul Roman |
Applicants to the program
are selected to be "ready" to submit RO1 proposals as the
principal investigator. Readiness is gauged both in terms of an existing
track record of publications and a potentially fundable area of interest.
Participants will be formally paired for 12 months with one or more
senior faculty members (mentor). The mentor(s) will make him/herself
available to provide guidance in developing a grant proposal to be
submitted for extramural funding. The mentor(s) will help identify
sources of funding. The project is expected to be based on the ideas
and interest of the mentee.
Each mentor(s)/mentee pair will
work out a schedule of meetings that best meets their own schedules
and needs. In addition, there will be a series of program seminars
concerning research funding in the social and behavioral sciences.
We envision seminars concerning Government Funding Opportunities,
Working with Private Foundations, Resources and Procedures in the
University of Georgia Reserach Office, and other topics suggested
by the Fellows in this program.
Administration
The program will be administered
through the Institute for Behavioral Research. All mentors and mentees
will be Fellows of IBR during the active year.
Resources for Mentoring
Fellows
Mentoring Fellows may apply for
funds to facilitate their pilot research. The exact amount of funds
available will depend on decisions in the OVPR's office regarding
funding.
Under most circumstances, the mentee's
home department will provide release time from teaching and/or departmental
service.
Appointments
Nominations for the 2007-2008 academic
year are due by Thursday, March 14, 2008 and should be forwarded
to the Director, Institute for Behavioral Research, 514 Boyd Graduate Studies Research Center. Appointments will be announced by April 28, and the program
will begin with the academic year (August, 2008). Candidates
must be nominated by their department head. All faculty members
are eligible to apply. The application will include the qualifications
of the mentee and a brief description of the proposed research
project. A mentor will be selected by the Steering Committee
of the Mentoring Program. A committee of senior researchers
at the Institute will review applications for Behavioral Research.
For additional information, contact Dr. Steven Beach (542-1806)
or Ms. Sandra Gary (542-6100).
Credit
Each mentee is expected to submit at least
one research proposal for extramural funding. The proposal will be credited
jointly to the mentee's home department and to IBR. If the proposal is
funded it will be administered at IBR and the overhead return split equally
between IBR and the mentee's home department. The IBR potion of overhead
return will be made available for the PI's research use as per current
IBR policy.
