My research interests center around identifying the psychosocial factors that predict adjustment of patients and their families to chronic and/or serious illness with particular focus on helping and caregiving, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. I examine how these factors are related to both mental and physical health. An ongoing program of research investigates processes underlying the effects that providing help/care to another person have on the provider's emotional and physical well-being. Emerging interests are in how these reactions influence the quality of care the patient receives.
