My research focuses on how
close relational partners discuss relationship problems, with
a focus on how relationship perceptions and communicators' intentions
structure the linguistic choices that communicators utilize during
interaction. This work reflects my interest in how intentions
shape communication and how relational partners can influence
and change our intentions (and in turn, change our behaviors)
during an interaction. In other related studies I have considered
low perceptions of a partner's power and commitment, as well
as one's sense of self influence communicative intentions and
behaviors regarding relational problems. Currently, I am examining
how perceived and actual alcohol use affects decisions about
relational problems and the behaviors enacted during discussions
about those problems.
