My primary area of research
focus is in the area of interracial communication, racial/ethnic
identity, and the media. I have designed and conducted studies
exploring how racial/ethnic identities influence interpersonal
interactions and how these identities are portrayed in film.
My current interests have extended beyond societal attitudes
towards race to address the more complex relationship between
genetics and race. The three goals of my research are (1) to
debunk myths supporting the belief that racial differences are
genetically based, (2) to explore the extent to which beliefs
about genetics and racial differences adversely affect communication
between (and within) racially/ethnically diverse groups, and
(3) to understand how the media influence and shape our attitudes
about genetics and different racial ethnic groups.
