My
research investigates people’s attitudes toward risk when
they have some control over an uncertain event. This has
been found to differ in fundamental ways from risk taking
when the decision maker doesn’t have control. People
have been found to be willing to bet on answers in which
they are highly confident, even beyond levels of risk that
make those bets unfavorable. They are much less inclined
to bet on answers in which they are less confident, even
when the risk is so low as to make the bets favorable over
the long run. This has wide-ranging possible applied relevance.
For example, pathological gamblers appear to be more prone
to it than others, suggesting a promising avenue for understanding
this disorder.
