I examine the
influences of parents, teachers, and peers on the development
of gender differences in early mathematics strategy use. I also
conduct research on the role of metacognition (children's knowledge
about themselves as learners, the strategies they use, and the
tasks) on their ability to use strategies. Finally, I examine
how motivational factors, particularly beliefs about effort and
ability, influence strategy use and are influenced by the social
environment.
