Methods Group
Institute for Behavioral Research
(IBR)
at the University of Georgia
The Methods and Models Group, under the
direction of Dr. Patrick Horan and Dr. Bob Vandenberg, provides a
forum in which researchers can pursue common interests concerning the
use of structural equation methods in social science research.
Structural equation modeling represents
a generalization and synthesis of the traditional econometric and psychometric
modeling techniques, one that is receiving much attention in the social
science research community. Although much of the literature approaches
structural equation modeling (SEM) as a purely statistical procedure, our
strategy as an interdisciplinary group is to focus on conceptual frameworks
and modeling strategies that can be used to link substantive research problems
in the social sciences to structural equation estimation methods.
The Methods Group does not
seek the primary allegiance of IBR participants, but offers a resource
for members of all other IBR groups, as well as other interested faculty
and graduate students from across the university. We provide an interdisciplinary
forum for identifying and pursuing analytical problems and research opportunities
for which structural equation modeling may be appropriate.
While the format for our meetings varies
according to the issue that we are addressing, most regular sessions are
based on discussion of an outside reading recommended by group members.
These articles typically involve an actual or potential SEM application,
or a review of issues in SEM utilization. Our sessions are intended to
allow participants to learn by working through the issues involved in such
applications.
