Institute for Behavioral Research (IBR) at the University of Georgia

The Center for Family Research is one of the longest standing Centers within IBR with a long history of supporting interdisciplinary collaboration and research. The Center has been very successful in stimulating intellectual interchange and enhancing the grantspersonship of its members.

The purpose of the Center for Family Research is to promote the understanding of the family through research conducted by interdisciplinary teams of scientists. An emphasis is placed on data-based research, grantsmanship, and collaboration. The Center for Family Research consists of a group of IBR Fellows, Adjunct Fellows and graduate students whose research interests focus on the family. The research of Fellows of the Center are predominantly grant-supported. These research efforts include the investigation of family processes (e.g., parenting, spousal communication), family stress (e.g., divorce, HIV infection, alcohol abuse, medical illness), and prevention/intervention efforts (e.g., reducing risk behavior of youth).

Furthermore, funded projects focus on children, marital dyads, and context (e.g., violence in the neighborhood) as they impact upon individuals in families and as these individuals impact their environment outside of the family. The roles of an individual's cognitions, affects, and behavior is considered when studying family processes.

The primary mechanisms whereby Fellows in the Center for Family Research interact are as follows: collaboration on research projects, seminars presented by Fellows; and an annual colloquium presented by national and international scholars. The Center attempts to promote research among social and behavioral scientists across the campus by involving faculty members without primary affiliations with the Institute and graduate students in its activities.
